Wigs have come a very long way over the last 20 years. Gone are the days shopping the local costume store for those shiny, itchy, fake-looking wigs we all remember buying for our Halloween costumes. Today’s wig shopper has an overwhelming selection of suppliers, wig designs and materials to choose from.
Wigs have quickly gained popularity among online shoppers in recent years. This is largely due to the improvements in quality and design. Quality wigs were once hard to find, and only affordable to actors, musicians, and celebrities. For everyone else, the only option was shopping at the local costume store for itchy and unconvincing wigs. Luckily, that is not the case anymore. Modern-day wigs can feel comfortable and look realistic. Second, wigs give you the ability to drastically change your appearance within minutes without any hassle. With wigs, you don’t have to worry about the long term commitment and potential damage that can come with hair dyes and styling methods. Combining this with more affordable pricing and unlimited selections has spawned an incredibly popular pastime for fantasy fans all over the world. That pastime is called Cosplay.
What Is Cosplay?
The ultimate fandom tribute to any storyline character is to mimic or personify that character themself. Cosplay is just that. Cosplay comes from the combining of the words “costume” and “play”. It is a form of performance art that involves dressing up and personifying a fictional character. The availability of novelty wigs has made full costume transformations possible for super-fans.
Cosplay was originally made popular in Japan when people began attending sci-fi conventions dressed as their favorite manga and anime characters. Since then, this trending costume-play phenomenon has spread worldwide. It is no longer limited to just anime and manga. It has grown to include virtually any fictional character you can imagine. From anime and manga, Hollywood cinema, to bedroom erotica, the possibilities are endless.
With Hollywood’s longstanding release of fantasy blockbuster series like Harry Potter, Star Wars, and the Marvel universe, it’s easy to see how fans are keen to get into cosplay. Who hasn’t watched one of the latest blockbusters and imagined what it would be like to be one of the iconic characters in that film? With cosplay, you can step into the shoes of your favorite Marvel, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, or any other character you desire.
Alongside movie fans are the large group of cosplayers who design and embody their own fantasy characters. This genre of cosplay has a viral following on Youtube, Instagram and other social networks. People everywhere are spending more of their leisure time experiencing the fantasy of costume-play.

How To Wear Synthetic Wigs
Here’s an excellent tutorial showing beginners how to wear cosplay wigs.
Tips For Owning Synthetic Wigs
- Use a nylon or netted wig cap under your wig. Use extra caps if you have lots of thick hair.
- Use specialized shampoos and conditioners designed for wigs
- Use a wide-tooth comb designed for wigs to maintain the hairs
- Store away from UV light, in a box away from dust
- Trim the bangs to fit your face.
- Spritz the wig with a water bottle when styling or combing.
Although caring for a synthetic wig is similar to caring for human hair, there are a few important things to consider in order to keep your wig in good condition. Synthetic hair requires tools that are specifically designed for synthetic hair fibers. Therefore, you will need to avoid using a brush that is designed for human hair. Instead, opt for a wig brush or wide tooth comb to avoid damaging the wig. To wash your wig, use a shampoo and conditioner that is designed for wigs. Make sure your wig is stored away from UV light to avoid color fade, preferably in a wig box to prevent your wig from getting dusty or dirty.
To prevent your wig from sliding around and to help with comfort, wear a synthetic or nylon netted wig cap under your hairpiece. If your natural hair is thick, you can layer multiple wigs caps. To help with styling, you can use a water bottle to spritz water on your wig to help with static. If the bangs are too long, you can trim them to better frame your face.

How To Wash Your Synthetic Wigs
Wigs can carry smells and dust from the environment and will eventually require cleaning. How often you need to clean your wig depends on how often you wear it. A general time frame ranges from 4 to 6 weeks or every 30 wears. Fortunately, cleaning your wig is quite manageable and most mid-range synthetic wigs are designed with washing in mind.
Before you wash your wig, you should thoroughly brush it to remove knots. Detangling the wig before you wash it will save you the frustration and heartbreak of trying to detangle it while it’s wet. Purchase a shampoo that is formulated for synthetic hair and fill a bucket or the sink with cold water. Dissolve the shampoo into the water and mix in until the water becomes mildly sudsy. Fold the wig into the sink and gently massage the wig with your hands for a few minutes. Let the wig soak in the water for 5-10 minutes and rinse clean. Run cold water over the wig until no more soapy water runs out. A detachable showerhead or sink faucet will make rinsing quicker and easier.
Gently squeeze the water out of the hair. Try to remove as much as you can to reduce drying time. Lay the wig flat on a dry towel on top of a table. Let the wig dry overnight. When the wig is completely dry, the hair will be tangled and frizzy. Simply hang the wig on a stand or your head and comb the hairs straight. The wig hairs should return to its shape once brushed out. A word of caution, do not comb your wig until it is completely dry. Combing a wig while it’s wet could stretch the wig fibers and ruin the style.
